A group of seven accused individuals of German far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind attacks on sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
