RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
