Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
